St. Michael's has dramatically
enhanced the care it provides, and many health care professionals
have verified that the care presently offered is above and
beyond that which most other adult care facilities offer.
In light of this notable accomplishment and always striving
to serve the needs of the Greek American community, the Home
is committed to expanding both the size of the facility and
the level of care which it is licensed to offer.
Its limited capacity of 60 residents and its certification from the State of New York as an "adult home" mean that St. Michael's has a waiting list of applicants and also cannot retain or accept individuals who need a higher level of care than the Home is licensed to provide. In 2004 alone, 24 residents had to be transferred to nursing homes and one can only imagine how traumatic this was for those individuals who were deprived of an environment which was not only Greek Orthodox but also a loving caring one in which they felt that they were amongst family.
For this reason, we are committed to the expansion (number of beds and level of care) of the facility. The major obstacle which has been encountered in this endeavor so far has been the purchase of an appropriate site. Since the Home is readily accessible to the areas from which the residents primarily come, i.e., the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut and the mid-Hudson Valley AND because of the proximity to many services (physicians, hospitals, therapists, aids, medical technicians) from which our residents benefit, AND because most of the Greek-speaking staff is from the surrounding neighborhood, it has been deemed most beneficial to remain, if at all possible, in the immediate area.
The facility, unfortunately, is located on less than an acre of land
and the local authorities will not allow an increase in the
size of the facility at its present location. St. Michael's
has looked at countless sites, going through extensive procedures
and processes, but despite our best efforts, we have not been
successful. This task has been made more difficult because
of the dramatically enhanced real estate market but, BE ASSURED,
the search continues!
St. Michael's is truly a unique ministry of our Archdiocese
offering a level of care not found elsewhere. Spiritual, emotional
and physical comfort and care are provided in a loving Greek
Orthodox environment where residents are treated as "family
members". For five decades, the Home has cared
for countless members of our community and even greater demands
will be placed on the facility since the number of elderly
in the United States is growing faster than any other age
group.
With blessings from above and support of our many friends, St. Michael's will meet these challenges and continue its distinguished history of service bringing much honor and pride to the Greek Orthodox Church! The Home has established an Expansion Fund for all those individuals who would like to offer assistance at this time and assist us in this sacred task to assure that every Greek Orthodox senior is able to live out his/her life in a caring, loving Greek Orthodox environment in which they enjoy the quality care they deserve. |
